Grouting is Not Fun

You know, I had a blast laying our tile backsplash (okay, maybe that’s a sliiiight exaggeration, but really, it was actually not unenjoyable).  I thought of it kinda like a puzzle and banged out the whole kitchen in just a few hours (which is quite a feat considering how Type A I am).

I was excited to grout.  Like, really, honestly, genuinely excited. And let me tell you something. Grouting sucks. It is absolutely no fun. It comes in second (on the no-fun meter) to re-wiring outlets and light switches (there will be a tutorial on that on the blog as soon as I recover from how not fun that was).

Grout is annoying, it dries quickly, it doesn’t spread as easily as the guys on HGTV make it look, and well … it’s just not fun.

But, I figured I owe you a little update on the backsplash progress … two walls are laid, grouted, and done (just needs to be sealed) and I’ve got one wall to go. It really does look fantastic … and will look even better once I get all the crap (pieces of tile, grout blobs, mortar smudges, box cutters, paper towels, etc) off the countertops and seal and caulk it.

Fear not, once it’s done, I’ll share how to do it yourself (it’ll save you a few hundo!).

For now, these pictures will have to do:

Make it a good day!

Grouting IS the worst. But what makes it even worse is when you finish, and the grout cracks, and you have to pick out chunks of it and re-grout! Hope you survive the rest of it!

Oh dear lord. I sure hope it doesn’t get to that. I’m putting off that last wall. I want it done, but I sooo don’t want to do it!

This looks good! Grouting is so so messy. In high school, I worked at a pottery and bead studio and we also did mosaics. Whenever I worked on a project, I always thought grouting was going to be fun, and of course, was always reminded how not fun it is. Ugh. Good luck!

Can’t agree more. Just finished grouting the first section of my own backsplash. A week later I’m still trying to clean it up to meet my own Type A standards. Yuck.

Confession: I still have one small wall to grout. So. Not. Fun.
