It’s Official: We’re Moving to Sebastian, FL!

… because why not have a baby and move 1,000 miles away all at once?

We finally decided to pull the trigger and put a contract on a to-be-built house. We’ve been “moving to Florida in 2-3 years” for 2-3 years now … so, it’s time.  We’ll be 19 miles away from my parents, a few hours from my sister-in-law, about 45 minutes from my grandparents, and about 90 minutes from 3 of my cousins (who live in Orlando).

Not only will we be near family, but the cost of living is significantly less than where we are now. Even as far as we are–20 miles–from downtown DC, the price of housing is exorbitant. We live in a 1,300 square foot townhouse with a great master bedroom and two 9×9 closets — er, guest rooms.  If we wanted to move out of this house and upgrade to something larger, we would either have to pay well over half a million dollars (gasp) or move further out by at least 50-60 miles (at which point, we’d be a good 90+ minutes away from any family, so what’s the point!?).

After lots of thinking, we just decided that it makes more sense for us to move down to FL, cut our mortgage in half, and focus on quality of life. With the money we’ll save, we can save for Baby Rod’s college fund. We can put Baby Rod in ballet, football, art classes; whatever he/she wants. We can save up money to take family vacations. We’ll be able to live comfortably and build up savings … something we wouldn’t be able to do here. Here, we spin our wheels, work to pay our bills, and are able to save a little every month. It feels like we never get ahead.

So … it’s Sebastian, FL or BUST!

After a slew of house issues lately (that have resulted in a new water heater, new AC unit, new drywall/baseboards/carpet in the basement), we decided we wanted to build. We want to pick every single thing that goes into our house and we want to know that everything is of the best quality. Not only that, but we want to be in this next house for 5-10+ years, so brand new systems and appliances definitely make that easier on our wallets.

So … without babbling further, here’s our house!

We. Are. So. Excited.

Here’s the floorplan (note: our house will be opposite both of these images, garage will be on the right and everything will be flipped):

elmii_floorplanWe’re going to have palm trees! We’re going to have a POOL! We’re going to have a screened enclosure! We’re going to have three garages. Three. 3. Uhwhat!? Two closets in the master. Two walk-in closets! Two vanities. A soaking tub. A freaking soaking tub. And a toilet room! Mercy. We’re going to have 2,700 square feet of space to raise our family and enjoy the beautiful Florida sun.

My office will be the sitting room off the master … we’ll be enclosing it with a french door so I can close everyone out and work. The house will be outfitted with the most efficient appliances, the safest windows/doors (hurricane safe), and we’ll get to pick every single little finish and detail.

As scary as it is to pick up and move 1,000 miles away from friends, family, and just about everything we’ve ever known; we really are so excited to start this new chapter and raise Baby Rod and his/her future sibling in a sunny, happy, beautiful place.

They’re breaking ground around the beginning of December, and we should be able to close as early as June. Yes. Having a baby at the beginning of May and likely moving mid-June. Shew. Wish us luck!

I love that you made it a point to mention that your floorplan is flipped (I’m known by our builder as the crazy garage-right lady).

Also, super pumped that you guys are going to be Floridians soon. We’re 3 hours north of Sebastian.

And, most importantly, yay babies!

LOL! I have been SO insistant on the garage being on the right side … for some reason I HATE the floorplan with it on the left … but switch it around and ZOMG it’s perfect. I can’t wait to be closer to you guys, and have loved watching your home progress!

My dad has quarterly appointments at Mayo in Jacksonville, so maybe we can do lunch once I’m down there permanently and accompanying him for all his tests!! xo

We live in Palm Beach and are thinking about moving to Sebastian. Are you there yet? We are looking at a few developments there. Could you share your opinions?

Just saw this! Hi again! :)

WE LOVE IT! It’s a quiet town, but everything you need is either in Sebastian or Vero Beach. There are so many kind people, the river is beautiful, the seafood is great, and we love our neighborhood. The houses are built very well, and the people are fantastic! Feel free to email me if you’d like to chat more – nme . rodriguez at gmail dot com!
